DANIEL BOONE CONSERVATION AREA

EQUESTRIAN TRAIL

NEAREST TOWN: Big Spring (Warren County).
DIRECTIONS: From Warrenton, take 1-70 west for 11 miles. Go south on Route Y for 3 miles to the area sign, go south on the gravel Tower Road for 2 miles to the horse trail parking lot.
TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Although primarily an equestrian trail, cyclists may use the same trails always giving right-of-way to horses.

In 1943, former Conservation Commissioner A. P. Greensfelder donated the original acreage for this area. Later acquisitions brought this tract to a total of 3,520 acres. This area is primarily an oak and hickory upland forest. The horse trails, which are open to mountain biking, are only open seasonally, from the end of the spring firearms turkey season to the beginning of the fall firearms turkey season. The trail crosses Tower Road several times in case you need to bail from the trail.

HIGHLIGHTS: This trail passes up and down several drainages and traverses near several lakes and ponds.
HAZARDS: Open from end of spring turkey season to beginning of fall turkey season. Wear hunter's orange. Call ahead to make sure that you are only riding it during the time that it is open.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: The Katy Trail State Park is located nearby. To get there, head south on Tower Road to get to Hwy 94 and the Katy Trail. In Daniel Boone Conservation Area, bicycles are permitted only on roads and trails open to vehicular traffic and horseback riding and on service roads posted closed to motorized vehicles, except when further restricted by posting.

TERRAIN: Although the entire ride changes only 300 feet in elevation, there are several technical sections that even challenge horseback riders.
RIDING TIME: 3 hours.
LAND STATUS: Missouri Department of Conservation.
SERVICES & ACTIVITIES: Primitive camping is allowed. No restroom facilities provided.
RATING: Moderate to difficult with several technical sections.
