South City Otters

Who are the Otters?

We are a NICA youth mountain bike racing team in St Louis, MO. Our kids are in grades 6-12 and race in the fall of every year all over Missouri. / NICA: nationalmtb.org / Missouri NICA: missourimtb.org.

The Missouri Interscholastic Cycling League was founded in 2018 as a non-profit (501(c)3) Emergent League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). We facilitate the development of high school and middle school teams/clubs for grades 6-12 and provide the education, training, licensing, and insurance for coaches and volunteers. We also produce high-quality mountain bike events and races that emphasize the value of participation, camaraderie, positive sporting behavior, and well-being over competition.

The focus for 2022 is expanding our reach and providing the best experience for our community! #MOkidsonbikes

OUR VISION is to improve the lives of Missouri’s youth and communities through cycling.

Our Mission is to provide high quality, safe and fun mountain bike programs for Missouri’s youth, exposing students to the opportunity to build strong body, mind, and character through an equal and inclusive scholastic-based program.

Southside Cyclery is the proud Title Sponsor of the Otters! We offer the student-athletes special pricing, internship programs and loaner bikes and also support practices and races.

Meet the South City Otters/South Side Cyclery Interns!

South Side Cyclery offers an internship program to members of the South City Otters.

This allows youth racers to learn more about bikes and the biking community, alongside their coaches.

Lauren

I joined NICA in the summer of 2020 as a beginning mountain biker. I learned a lot in the few months I was riding with the team and I excelled much quicker than I thought I would. My coaches were incredibly helpful and pushed me out of my comfort zone so I could try new things. Because of this I was able to have an amazing first year of racing in which I won state. Now I’m about to go onto my third year of being on the team and continue to reach new heights.

One of my coaches I met my first year opened South Side Cyclery in early January of 2021. She offered to let me help out once a week so I can learn about bikes from some of the best cyclists I’ve ever met. Another interest of mine is retail, and when you intern at a bike shop, you get the best of both worlds. I love the environment of South Side and the people are great.

Lucy

I joined my NICA team in its inaugural season in 2020 and it has given me many new opportunities and experiences, including Interning at South Side and being competitive in a fun racing environment. I also have gotten to meet many people like me that like riding bikes. Being able to intern at South Side has helped me learn more about how bikes and the bike industry works. I look forward to even more fun experiences through biking.

Sam

I joined the Otters in 2021, totally new to mountain biking. At first, I was nervous, but also excited. There are all levels of bikers on the team, so no one is left out. I started improving immediately, and slowly moved up the levels, along with the new friends I have made. I love this team because you can go at your own pace; it’s as competitive as you make it. Everyone is so friendly and it is so fun.

Being on the team has given me a lot of new experiences, and has made me love biking so much. As soon as I learned about the South Side Cyclery internship, I had to try it. I love it, and everyone is so nice. I’m very glad I tried it out, it has been an awesome experience.

Beck

I joined NICA in the summer of 2020 and it gave me something fun to do over quarantine. I quickly improved and moved up the levels and realized my incredible love for the team and the sport. After my first season ended I started at South Side as an intern and I loved working with the awesome team we have here. South Side has taught me important things about my bike and bike mechanics.

Being in NICA has helped me meet so many other kids my age who love mountain biking the same as me and even connect with some old friends!

Lawson

I joined NICA in 2020 and I like mountain biking. I enjoy mountain biking and BMX. I have fun during the race season and really enjoy the NICA atmosphere. Shortly after Beck, I joined South Side and gained a lot of biking knowledge. I really enjoy the staff and working at South Side. I hope to keep working at South Side and learn more new skills.
